[Overview]

An increasing number of countries are exploring the use of administrative data for population and housing censuses. Shifting census methodology from full‐field enumeration to other approaches involving administrative data offers significant benefits, including producing more frequent and timely data, reducing census costs and improving quality and coverage. However, this transition presents many challenges, particularly in building necessary technical and institutional capacity.

To assist countries in this effort, ESCAP developed the Self-Assessment Tool on Readiness to Use Administrative Data for Census (SATRAC) in 2023. The tool has been refined with input from Member States and relevant international organizations through online consultations and various events, and the latest version of SATRAC will be launched at this side event.
