The SBJ conducted the 2025 Census as of 12:00 a.m., October 1, 2025, starting to collect responses from September 20. The Census aims to provide a clear picture of the population and demographics of Japan, and has been conducted every five years since 1920. The 2025 Census is the twenty-second of its kind. There were three ways to respond to the census: online, by mail, or by submitting the questionnaire to the enumerator. The SBJ encouraged households to respond online, which allows for responding with a smartphone or similar device at any time. 

The SBJ will release the preliminary results by May 2026 and the final ones by September 2026.
